“I need a medical for work” is a common reason for a visit, but it does not fully describe what the document must contain. The requirements may relate to a specific position, activity or working conditions. Preparation starts with the information from your employer, not with the assumption that the same form is enough everywhere.

Ask your employer exactly what is required

Ask for the name of the document, information about the position and any specific instructions. Check whether additional examinations or tests are required and whether the employer directs you to a particular procedure. Pass this information on to the practice when booking.

A medical certificate for work, a document for a driving licence and other certificates are not interchangeable. If you have a template, show it in advance. This lets the practice judge whether it can arrange what is needed and whether you also need to see other specialists.

What to check with the practice

  • Do you issue this type of document, and for what purpose?
  • Do I need to be a registered patient of the practice?
  • Which documents and existing results should I bring?
  • Are additional examinations or tests needed?
  • What is the current price and what does it include?
  • When can the document be completed after the necessary assessment?

Don’t plan on the certificate as a guaranteed “few minutes” service. The content of the document must match the medical assessment and the applicable requirements. If more information is needed, the timing may differ from what you expected.

Prepare the relevant documents

Bring an identity document and the information about the job you are applying for. If you have a chronic condition, a previous medical conclusion or current treatment, provide the relevant medical information. Ask the practice which results can be used and which need to be recent.

Don’t send identity documents and health information in reply to public adverts or to unverified intermediaries. Use the practice’s official channel and ask how medical data should be provided.

What to know about payment

Don’t assume that every medical document is covered by NHIF (National Health Insurance Fund). NHIF describes specific rules, including for a certificate for starting work for people aged 16 to 18. Check the current rule for your case; this does not mean it is automatically issued free of charge for all ages and purposes.

As of the review date, Dr Boris Gavrilov’s profile on SuperDoc lists a service for a medical certificate for work. Check the current price and arrangements for the chosen practice location through the practice’s website, its profile on trqbvami.com and SuperDoc. trqbvami.com has an editorial partnership with the practice.

Check the document when you receive it

Make sure that the names, the purpose and the other details are correct. If there is a question about whether your employer will accept it, check the requirement with the employer and the doctor. If a correction is needed, go back to the practice that issued it, instead of editing the medical document yourself.
